Canadians Wear Pink T-Shirts to Take a Stand Against Bullying

Custom T-Shirts Can Help End Bullying

On the last Wednesday in February (this year, February 28th), thousands of Canadian students and professionals will wear pink in a show of support of anti-bullying campaigns.

Pink Shirt Day began in 2007 with two high school students in Nova Scotia. After witnessing a fellow student being bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt, the two boys went out and bought 50 pink t-shirts and handed them out to fellow male students to show their support.

The pink shirt has now become a symbol for the fight against bullying, and it’s not only students who are participating. Thousands of schools, workplaces and government organizations in Canada and abroad now wear pink custom t-shirts with slogans like “Bullying Stops Here” and “It’s Not Cool to be Cruel” on the last Wednesday in February in support of anti-bullying campaigns.

Bullying a Serious Concern

Bullying has short and long term psychological consequences, with implications on mental health and academic performance and has been recognized as a serious public health problem by Canadian health officials. According to Canadian Institutes of Health Research, at least one in three adolescent students report being bullied. And, bullying doesn’t stop at schools. Canadian adults report experiencing bullying at the workplace and online as well. A 2014 national survey showed 45 percent of Canadian workers felt bullied on the job.

How Custom T-Shirts Can Help End Bullying

Custom t-shirts have an amazing capability to unite individuals around a common cause, and play an important role in standing up to bullying. Victims of bullying often feel ostracized from their peers.

But when wearing the same colour custom t-shirts, printed with the same slogan, they are instantly met with a feeling of camaraderie and can get a jolt of self-esteem. By wearing the same custom t-shirts as their peers, they are able to stand in solidarity and show bullies that they aren’t the most powerful group.
